Stems & Study is a floral design series intended to mimic a floral design program. I’ve always been drawn to floral design and it’s been something I’ve wanted to be more intentional about learning. Being a wedding photographer, I was exposed to beautiful arrangements made by professionals regularly and was always in “awe” of what they could create. When I initially moved to San Diego, I seriously explored the idea of attending a floral design program, however, despite extensive research, I was unable to find a local program that suited my style by teaching modern yet natural arrangement. Most programs had a very traditional teaching style and many topics on the syllabus did not interest me.
That’s where I came up with the idea of Stems & Study. I curated my own dream floral school syllabus and decided to entrust the internet, florist friends, and trial-and-error to be my teachers. I want to make it clear that I’m taking the role of a student in this series and by sharing what I’m learning on this website, it’s like I’m sharing my notes with fellow classmates. Think of it as a DIY flower school. I hope you’ll join me as I attempt to learn the ins and outs of this incredibly special creative medium. If you’re a florist, gardener, talented hobbyist, or have a grandma filled with floral wisdom, I’d love to hear from you.
